Jean E. Angell, Rhode Island – 2003

Jean is chairperson and teacher of health and physical education at Scituate, RI, Middle/High School.  She is also the athletic director in Scituate.  From 1972 to the present, she has been the head coach of volleyball and coached softball from 1981 to the present.  She officiated volleyball at the high school level for four years and at the collegiate level for two.

Professionally, Jean has worked with the Rhode Island Association for Girls and Women in Sport, serving as president from 1979 to 1981 and from 2002 to 2003.  From 1974-1975 and 1983-1985, she served as the director of softball.  She was president of the state field hockey program from 1993-1994.  Since 1987, Jean has served on the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Sub-committee on Girls’ Athletics.

Her league and board affiliations include: the Rhode Island Interscholastic League, executive board member of the Athletic Administrators Association, president of the Rhode Island Association of Girls and Women in Sport, member of the Rhode Island Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance, committee member of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Hall of Fame Committee, member of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Realignment Committee, and a member of the National Field Hockey Rules Committee.

Jean has coached for 31 seasons with a lifetime record off 297 wins, including softball for 22 seasons.  She retired from volleyball officiating in 2001.  She was the director of the first interscholastic league and is currently the director of the field hockey association.  For two terms Jean was the president of the Rhode Island Association, Division for Girls and Women in Sport.  Jean was also a member of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Subcommittee on Girls sports from 1975-1976, 1983-1984, and 1988-1989.  Since 1993 she has been a voting member of the Rhode Island Principals’ Committee.

Her basketball teams have won six Division A Championships: 1980, 1984, 1991, 1995, 1998, and 2002.  They were Class B champs in 1998 and 1999, and runners-up in 2000.  Softball teams coached by Jean were Division Champions in 1987 and Class B state runners-up in 1988.  She officiated high school volleyball playoffs in 1974, 1982, 1986, and 1989.
