Joyce Harvey, Rhode Island – 2001

Joyce is a teacher of health education and physical education at South Kingstown, RI, High School where she also coaches the girls’ varsity teams in track & field (28 years), cross country (10 years), gymnastics (8 years), and soccer (8 years).

She is affiliated with the Rhode Island Association for Health, Physical education, Recreation and Dance, AAHPERD, the Rhode Island Indoor Track & Field Association, and the Rhode Island Outdoor Track & Field Association.  She has served as director of track & field (4 years) and field hockey (4 years).  For 3 years, Joyce has served on the sub-committee for Indoor Track and is a Rhode Island track & field official.  She is an advisor to the Boy Scouts Troop #2620 in High Adventures.

Her teams have amassed outstanding records including: 35 divisional championships in track & field; 37 class championships in track & field; and 7 state championships in track & field.  Her track & field team for 2000 were champions at the Renaissance Games.  During her career her track teams have participated in the New England Track & Field Championships every year as well as in the Hershey Track program.

Joyce was recognized as Female Coach of the Year in 1979 and Coach of the Year at the University of Rhode Island in 1998.  She was the Rhode Island Physical Education Teacher of the Year in 1996 and the East Coast Regional Physical Education Teacher of the Year in 1998.  In 1998 and 1999, she was the Girls’ Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year, and in 1999, the Female Coach of the Year by the Rhode Island Athletic Administrators.

Her many mentoring activities included Director of the South Kingstown Renaissance Games, advisor for “Students for Social and Environmental Justice”, and home-based program teacher and mentor.  She instituted the Rhode Island Lung Association “Tobacco Free Teens” program.
