Valerie Villucci, Rhode Island – 2025

Valerie Villucci’s remarkable career in coaching spans over 50 years, with 28 of those years dedicated solely to girls’ and women’s athletics. As the head women’s tennis coach at the University of Rhode Island for 23 years, Villucci built a program that reached unprecedented heights. Under her leadership, the Rams achieved a historic milestone in 2021 when they cracked the Oracle ITA Top 100 rankings for the first time in program history, climbing as high as No. 95 and maintaining their national ranking throughout the season. She retired in 2023, leaving behind a legacy as the primary architect and builder of the URI women’s tennis program.

Villucci’s tenure at URI was defined by her vision and dedication. She first led the women’s team from 1993 to 2004 before taking on the challenge of coaching the URI men’s team from 2004 to 2008. In 2009, she returned to the women’s program, where she remained through 2015. Importantly, Villucci became the first full-time coach in program history, a trailblazer who not only elevated the performance of her players but also helped cement the women’s tennis program as a respected force within collegiate athletics. Her devotion to her athletes and her sport made her a cornerstone of the URI community.

Beyond the wins and rankings, Villucci’s true impact has been her lifelong advocacy for women’s athletics and her commitment to mentoring the next generation of players and coaches. She has served as a panelist for the URI Women’s Athletic Symposium, facilitated and hosted the We Coach U seminar, volunteered as Tennis Coordinator for the World Scholar Athletic Games, and participated in the USTA Women in Tennis Cohort sessions, where she provided mentorship to aspiring coaches. A consummate teacher of the game, Villucci has inspired hundreds of young women throughout her career.

Her influence extends well beyond the courts. Villucci, a Division I tennis player and proud graduate of Rollins College, was previously inducted into the Sons of Italy Athletic Hall of Fame. Today, she takes great joy in sharing her love of sport with her four granddaughters, passing on her passion and infectious enthusiasm for athletics to the next generation. A champion for women’s sports, a trailblazer in collegiate tennis, and a mentor to countless athletes and coaches, Valerie Villucci’s induction into the New Agenda-Northeast Hall of Fame is a fitting tribute to her extraordinary career and lifelong dedication to the advancement of women in athletics.
