Beverly J. Wiley, Rhode Island – 2000
“In 1992, I became one of ten female commissioners out of a total of 99 in the Amateur Softball Association/USA Softball (ASA/USA). I am responsible for registering teams (1250) and umpires (180), awarding and supervision of ASA Championship Tournaments in 17 different classifications for men and women, boys and girls, in fast pitch and slow pitch. Additionally, I am responsible for the appointment and supervision of deputy and district commissioners and umpires-in chief. I am also responsible for the establishment of an ASA championship play classification code, which determines team and player classification in Rhode Island. All of this is done as a volunteer.”
Beverly is affiliated with the Rhode Island Sports council (44 years), the Rhode Island Board of Field Hockey Officials (8 years), is the founder and president of the board of “Girls Rhode Island.” She also serves on the Advisory Board of the Women’s Sports Foundation Communities Council.
In addition, Beverly is involved in numerous community services. She is a liaison to the Girl Scouts of Rhode Island with emphasis on providing sports opportunities. She has presented free clinics and introduced campers to traditional and nontraditional sports. In addition she founded Girls Rhode Island (Girls and women In Rhode island Love Sports) which is a local, nonprofit organization whose mission is to foster area growth and recognition of girls and young women in sports in Rhode Island. Girls RI promotes awareness, opportunity, and education in all areas of sports and physical fitness. It also provides access to and raises funds for grants and awards for local sports, athletes and teams. Girls RI was founded in 1998, and to date has raised over $25,000 which will be used for grants and awards for local athletes and teams and to cosponsor with the Girl Scouts of Rhode Island a National Girls and Women in Sport Day in 2001.
Beverly serves as the public address announcer for all RI Interscholastic League Championships (8 years). She was the color commentator for WICE Radio, for the first round NCAA basketball tournament game for Brown University vs UConn at Pauley Pavilion, Storrs, Ct. She was the team leader for the U.S. Olympic Festival in 1995.
In 1999, she was presented the Woman of Vision and Action Award by Women in Psychology. In 1993, 1994, 1996, and 1998, Beverly was presented the Amateur Softball Association Membership Award.
