Beverly Osterberg, Vermont – 2001
Beverly began her coaching career in 1959 during her student-teaching. Her lifetime career has included 34 years of field hockey, 13 years of softball and 3 years of tennis.
Beverly is affiliated with several professional organizations: the National Field Hockey Association, the Vermont Field Hockey Association (VP), the National Federation of State High School Associations, the American Driver and Traffic Safety Association, the Vermont Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association, the Vermont Athletic Directors Association, the International Four-H Youth Exchange, and the Vermont IFYE Association (current chair). She is also a member of the Vermont Retired Teachers’ Association. Beverly is a member of the Vermont DGWS (secretary, 2 years) and the Committee to develop state tournaments for girls’ varsity sports.
The career records amassed by her teams are truly amazing: varsity basketball 346-258; varsity softball 67-52; varsity tennis 18-4; and varsity field hockey 356-86-56. She also coached junior high school and middle teams which amassed equally outstanding records.
Her basketball teams were state champions twice and runners-up four times. Her tennis teams were state champs twice and runners-up once. They also earned a New England Title. Her field hockey teams won ten championships, were runners-up 5 times, semi-finalists 9 times, and made the quarter-finals 3 times.
Beverly has been recognized by many groups for her contributions to girls’ and women’s sport. In 1977 the staff and students presented her a plaque in recognition of five consecutive state championships. She was named the Division III Field Hockey Coach of the Year in 1988, 1993, and 1998. She received the Distinguished Service Award for Field Hockey. In 1982, the Johnson State College Foundation recognized her personal contribution to the highest ideals of interscholastic athletics. In 1990 the Stowe High School Boosters Club recognized her for instilling discipline, determination, character, and sportsmanship in children. In 1997, she was presented the Pathfinder Award from the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport.
