Debra McMullen, Rhode Island- 2025

As an educator and coach, Debra McMullen has tirelessly championed opportunities for girls and women in sports over the past 40 years. A graduate of Springfield College, she made her mark as the girls field hockey coach at East Greenwich High School (RI), a position she held from 1987 until her retirement in November, 2024. During that extraordinary tenure, McMullen led her program to a remarkable 9 state championships and 10 division titles, achievements that reflect her exceptional leadership and coaching expertise.

Her coaching success brought well-deserved recognition, including accolades as the Providence Journal Female Coach of the Year and Rhode Island Field Hockey Coach of the Year. Her unparalleled success culminated with her being inducted into both the East Greenwich High School Hall of Fame and the Rhode Island Interscholastic League (RIIL) Hall of Fame. While her trophy case is filled with tangible honors, McMullen has always believed that the true reward lies in the relationships she built with her players and their families over the past 40 years.

Beyond the wins and titles, McMullen has been a relentless advocate for girls’ sports, stepping into leadership roles to further the opportunities available to young women. She served as both President and Secretary of the Rhode Island Field Hockey Coaches Association and was an active voice within the RIIL, serving on numerous committees to represent field hockey across the state. Her leadership extended into administration as well, as she took on the role of athletic director at both the middle school and high school level, ensuring that student-athletes had access to strong, supportive programs. Her influence and advocacy have made her a respected leader within the Rhode Island athletic community and she was recently honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rhode Island Athletic Director’s Association.

Perhaps McMullen’s proudest achievement is the founding of EG Youth Field Hockey in 2007, a program she built from the ground up to provide opportunities for girls of all ages to experience and grow within the sport. Today, it stands as one of the strongest youth field hockey programs in Rhode Island, shaping future generations of athletes and ensuring a lasting impact well beyond her coaching years. Through her teaching, coaching, leadership, and advocacy, McMullen has forged a path for girls and women in sports that continues to inspire.
