Mildred Barnes, Massachusetts – 1994
A 1951 graduate of Sargent College, Millie started her teaching career at Winchester High School where she coached field hockey, basketball and softball. While in the Massachusetts area, she was active in MAHPERD, chairing the DGWS Committee as well as the softball and basketball committees. From 1952 through 1955, she served on the executive committee of the USFHA. An active official, Millie held national ratings in basketball, lacrosse, softball, volleyball, and field hockey.
Millie left Massachusetts and moved to the University of Iowa where she taught physical education and coached. From Iowa, she moved to Central Missouri where she taught physical education and coached, compiling a basketball record of 156 wins and 63 losses for a winning percentage of .712. Five out of nine years her teams qualified for the AIAW tournaments. Upon her retirement from Central Missouri, Millie was named Professor Emeritus.
While at both Iowa and Central Missouri, Millie was involved in numerous clinics and camps. She served at both the state and national levels on the editorial and advisory board for DGWS, AAU, and AAHPERD. Her involvement in basketball extended to the Olympic level where she toured with the U.S. Women’s Teams to Mexico City, Japan, Taiwan, Columbia, S. A., and China.
