Priscilla Schulz, Connecticut – 2008

Priscilla Schulz, Connecticut – 2008

Priscilla Schulz teaches physical education at New Canaan HS in New Canaan, CT, where she has been since 1978. She is a graduate of Southern Connecticut State College.  She began coaching volleyball, softball, and basketball.  Most recently she coached the junior varsity tennis team at New Canaan.

Priscilla is a member of the CT H. S. Coaches Association.  She is also active in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Conference, where she is on the Board of Directors, the Executive Board, and is currently the third vice president. She has also been the chairperson for volleyball for 20 years.   Priscilla is the founder (in 2000) and director of the Fairfield PAL (Police Athletic League) Field Hockey teams for girls in grades 7 and 8.  She also serves on the PAL Board of Directors.

In her 31st year of teaching, Priscilla has put an emphasis on intramurals to create more opportunities for involvement in sports and for “learning by playing”.  She believes that the key to success is the “opportunity to participate in sports” and that “nothing beats team sports as an opportunity to get young people to work together.”  Her work with girls is special because she believes that as girls see what they have and realize the opportunities they have had, “they give back as they get older – and thus the cycle continues.”

Also involved with special education students in a Best Buddies program at school, Priscilla volunteers once a week to teach golf skills for Special Olympic participants.
