Dorothy Johnson, Connecticut – 1996
Dorothy, a physical education teacher in Granby High School, Granby, CT, is the Coordinator of Physical Education for the Granby School system. She is also the field hockey coach for Granby High School.
From 1984-1992, she served as the Title IX Coordinator for the Granby School District and is a member of the Connecticut Board of Administrators of Physical Education. Dorothy is a member of the Connecticut AHPERD and AAHPERD. She participated in the Links to Leadership program sponsored by NAGWS.
Dorothy is affiliated with the North Central Connecticut Conference League and was the League representative to the Connecticut State Field Hockey Coaches Association. She also serves on the Connecticut State Field Hockey CIAC Board and is an Executive Board Member on the Connecticut High School Coaches Association.
Her lifetime coaching record is 300-62-66. Her teams were Connecticut State Champs in 1973, 1974, 1978, 1980, 1982, and 1985; state runners-up in 1988 and 1989; quarter-finalists in 1975-1977, 1981, 1983, 1984, 1987, 1991-1993, and 1995. They were NCCC League Champs for ten years.
Dorothy has been the recipient of many recognitions and awards: 1974 the Field Hockey Coach of the Year by CHSCA; 1982, NCLL recognized her for her outstanding contribution to coaching; 1982, 1985, 1993 NHSACC District I Coach of the Year; 1985 NIAA for outstanding contribution to coaching; 1984, 1988 and 1992 Connecticut Field Hockey Coaches Association Coach of the Year; 1992 CHSCA Hall of Fame Inductee; and 1996 National High School Athletic Coaches Association Coach of the Year.
