Lucy Ciesla, Massachusetts – 1996
Lucy is a physical education teacher at Braintree High School. She has also taught elementary and middle school physical education.
While a student at Bridgewater, Lucy, who majored in physical education, played volleyball, field hockey, basketball, track, softball, lacrosse, and was a member of the swim team. She captained the lacrosse team her senior year and received the Outstanding Player Award. Following graduation, she received a fellowship to the University of North Carolina where she coached volleyball. Lucy has also been a coach for the Special Olympics.
Lucy’s coaching career spanned 17 years. From 1971-1978, Lucy was assistant girls’ basketball coach. During those 8 years, the team earned a record of 78-23. She was the first and only coach of the girls’ golf team at Braintree High School, a team that was cut in 1979 because of Proposition 2 ½. She coached volleyball for 11 years (1977-1987) amassing a 172-16 varsity record and a 107-25 JV record.
Her volleyball teams have won 5 league championships, 1 co-championship, and had 4 undefeated seasons.
The Boston Globe named Lucy the 1987 Coach of the Year. In 1995 she was inducted into the Braintree High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
