
Rita Castagna, Massachusetts – 1993
Rita is currently completing her nineteenth year at Assumption College, Worcester, MA, with the last six as the Director of Athletics. She went to Assumption from Marian High School in Worcester, where she compiled a record of 134-39, winning 49 straight from 1966 through 1974.
In 1973 she assumed the dual role of coaching both Marian and Assumption, and coaching four sports at Assumption, including field hockey, volleyball, basketball, and softball. Her last softball team in 1983 was 21-5 and her 14-year basketball career climaxed at 132-57
Rita has held numerous elected positions on the boards of MAIAW, EAPECW, NCAA, and ECAC. She is currently the secretary for the Northeast-10 Conference, the tournament director for the Massachusetts state and district boys’ and girls’ high school basketball tournaments.
Rita, a 1966 physical education graduate of Bridgewater State College, was inducted into its Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989. She has also received the Paul N. Johnson Award for contributions to Worcester basketball, and was recognized in 1991 as the Assumption College Honorary Alumnus of the Year.
